How KORN Created A New Subgenre In Heavy Music

Andrea Rock of Warner Music Italy recently conducted an interview with KORN singer Jonathan Davis. You can now watch the chat below. A couple of excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET). On KORN pioneering a new sound with its self-titled 1994 album: Davis: "It's just what we did. We really didn't think about it — honestly. It was just how we played. The slower, downtuned — 'cause we were playing seven strings at that time — just that vibe of what we did was really heavy and that's just how it ended up. We didn't really think about it, honestly. It's just how we played. The first album came out and it just shocked a lot of people; they didn't know what to think of us, they didn't know what to do with us. And over the years, it's just evolved into changing and making a new genre in heavy music." On whether he thinks it's possible that a new band can come along today and have the same kind of impact that KORN did more than two decades ago: Davis: "It's always possible, bro. But it's hard. I think it's a different time now. I think there's a lot of music that's just saturated the whole music universe. So it's gonna take someone to do something really out there and something different for something like that to catch on, because back in the day, when you got signed with a record label, a big record label, it was a whole different way back then. Now I'm praying for something new to come out. 'Cause I'm always loving that and I've always… I'm trying to do different things, and that's what really makes me love music — finding different kind of stuff like that." KORN and STONE SOUR will join forces for a summer tour, set to get underway June 16 at the USANA Amphitheatre in Salt Lake City, Utah and then continue through early August. Presented by Live Nation, "The Serenity Of Summer" tour will be rounded out by support from Japan's female-fronted BABYMETAL, southern rapper YELAWOLF and ISLANDER (June 16-25), followed by a second leg (July 19 - August 2) which will see KORN joined by SKILLET, YELAWOLF and DED, creating a versatile bill reminiscent of KORN's famed "Family Values" tours in the past.
