Listen to this guy growl over a Steppenwolf cover on Quebec’s ‘The Voice’

Last week, some dude was on Quebec’s version of The Voice, and his rendition of Necrophagist’s “Stabwound” actually got him picked to move forward. Louis-Paul Gauvreau returned this past week, and instead of singing German death metal, this week he did a duet on Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild.”  We prefer Slayer’s cover of the song, […]

LABYRINTH: 'Someone Says' Video Released

"Someone Says", the new video from Italian metallers LABYRINTH, can be seen below. The song is taken from the band's new studio album, "Architecture Of A God", which will be released on April 21 via Frontiers Music Srl. In the spring of 2016, the band's founding members, Andrea Cantarelli and Olaf Thorsen received a call from Frontiers asking them to discuss with vocalist Roberto Tiranti the possibilities of a reunion with a return to their classic sound to mount a comeback for the band. After much discussion, the guys agreed to make an album and also to make a very special appearance at the the first annual Frontiers Metal Festival, where they performed their signature album, "Return To Heaven Denied", in its entirety. [Said performance is being prepared for a future home video release.] Olaf says: "This has been easily the most difficult and challenging album I ever worked on. "To be honest, when Frontiers contacted me, insisting to make this reunion happen, I was skeptical and worried. We couldn't simply make a new album; it wouldn't have been honest to the fans, to ourselves. "Of course, this is as easy to say as also unbelievably tough to make real: we have so many good albums out there, looking at us from their past and which people still keep in their minds and hearts. That's why we decided to strengthen our lineup, joining with nobody else but the best musicians we believed they would have fitted perfectly into our perspective of the music we were about to write." Andrea adds: "The making of this album has been a fantastic journey. We brought back a lot of classic elements of our music, mixing it with something new and I'm so enthusiastic about the final result." Roberto Tiranti makes it short: "Just when you thought you already gave everything you could, expressing every possible musical aspect of your way of intending music for a band like LABYRINTH, then comes 'Architecture Of A God' to remind you that nothing is impossible!" With a new lineup rounded out by drummer extraordinaire John Macaluso (TNT, RIOT, ARK), Oleg Smirnoff (VISION DIVINE, EDRITCH) on keyboards, and Nik Mazzucconi on bass, LABYRINTH are truly coming back stronger than ever and have offered up a superb self-produced album. "Architecture Of A God" (mixed by DGM's Simone Mularoni) is a record that encompasses all the elements the band is known for: fast power metal songs with unforgettable hooks, epic prog-infused metal songs, and some great melodic numbers that compose a record which is easily going to be another milestone for the Italian metal masters! "What we have in our hands, now, it's 'Architecture Of A God': by far, the most mature and complete album we ever wrote," concludes Thorsen. "There's no will to challenge our glorious past, but I'm really confident that, once released, this album will set a new standard for our music!" "Architecture Of A God" track listing: 01. Bullets 02. Still Alive 03. Take On My Legacy 04. A New Dream 05. Someone Says 06. Random Logic 07. Architecture Of A God 08. Children 09. Those Days 10. We Belong To Yesterday 11. Stardust And Ashes 12. Diamond LABYRINTH 2017 is: Roberto Tiranti - lead vocals Olaf Thorsen - lead guitars Andrea Cantarelli - lead guitars Nik Mazzucconi - bass guitar Oleg Smirnoff - keyboards John Macaluso - drums

CHILDREN OF BODOM Bassist Would Like To Make Traditional Concert DVD

Arianna of Rock Rebel Magazine conducted an interview with bassist Henkka Seppälä (a.k.a. Henkka T. Blacksmith) of Finnish metallers CHILDREN OF BODOM on March 22 in Italy. You can now watch the chat below. Asked if there are any plans for CHILDREN OF BODOM to film and release a new concert DVD to follow 2006's "Chaos Ridden Years/Stockholm Knockout Live", Henkka said: "I would like to do… If I could choose, I would just do one good show and have it recorded with cameras really nicely and we have a live album — like kind of a traditional live DVD. But as I talked yesterday with our label guys, it doesn't really make sense, and they were suggesting maybe we should do something like record one show live and have it as a bonus material for the next album or something. So, yeah, we have to think about these options, but it would be to put out something live again. But I think it should be a full show so that there's all the varieties of our history in one show." CHILDREN OF BODOM is performing most of its debut album, "Something Wild", on a European tour to celebrate the record's twentieth anniversary. The month-long trek, dubbed "20 Years Down & Dirty", kicked off on March 8 in Hanover, Germany and will conclude on April 4 in Stockholm, Sweden. CHILDREN OF BODOM recently embarked on a 21-date North American tour with special guests iconic black metal artist ABBATH, California-based metal act EXMORTUS, and Canada's progressive metallers ONI. The trek commenced in Quebec on November 23 and concluded in Brooklyn on December 19.

GLENN DANZIG Suggests Some Of California's Wildfires May Have Been Acts Of Terrorism

Glenn Danzig has suggested that at least some of the major California wildfires in the last several years may have been acts of terrorism. A recent study found that 84 percent of U.S. wildfires and 97 percent of wildfires in coastal California and the Central Valley were started by people. In California's Mediterranean climate region, 89 percent of the total 5,921,861 acres burned was caused by human-started wildfires. During an appearance on yesterday's (Monday, March 27) edition of SEX PISTOLS guitarist Steve Jones's radio show, "Jonesy's Jukebox", on the 95.5 KLOS station in Los Angeles, Danzig stated about California's destructive blazes: "I have a theory about fires in California: terrorism. It's maximum amount of carnage for the littlest amount of money: a match and a can of gas. And you go out and [find] a brush and boom! It doesn't cost a lot of money [and] it's done. That's really what it's about, right? "If you're gonna outlaw guns, some guy just decides he's gonna plow a giant truck into a ton of people in France and kills way more people," he continued. "If somebody wants to do something terrible like that, they're gonna do it." Asked if he thinks that's always been the way of humans — to have a percentage of people who are just not happy campers and want to cause havoc, Danzig said: "They just wanna F shit up, right? Yeah, of course, there's always gonna be people that aren't happy with something. It's just a matter of whether they're gonna go to an extreme to do it." According to the University Of Colorado At Boulder, the U.S. has experienced some of its largest wildfires on record over the past decade, especially in the western half of the country. The duration and intensity of future wildfire seasons is a point of national concern given the potentially severe impact on agriculture, ecosystems, recreation and other economic sectors, as well as the high cost of extinguishing blazes. The annual cost of fighting wildfires in the U.S. has exceeded $2 billion in recent years. The first DANZIG album of all-new material since 2010's widely acclaimed "Deth Red Sabaoth", "Black Laden Crown", will be released mid-May on Evilive Records/Nuclear Blast Entertainment. As previously reported, DANZIG and MINISTRY will perform at this year's edition of the "Blackest Of The Black" festival, set to take place May 26-27 at Oak Canyon Park in Silverado, California. The two-day event will feature over 20 artists, with DANZIG serving as headliner on May 27.

Full Album Stream: White Willow - 'Future Hopes'

Norwegian art rockers White Willow have always incorporated elements of progressive rock into their music, and on their seventh disc, Future Hopes, they continue to explore that path.

Future Hopes is nothing if not diverse; each song on the album sounds different, from the soundscapes of “Where There Was Sea There Is Abyss” to the guitar heavy sounds of “Animal Magnetism.” The album also experiments with electronic and acoustic sounds, making it an unpredictable listen.

Stream the entirety of Future Hopes below. White Willow release the album through Lasers Edge on March 31. Get it here.

HE IS LEGEND Releases 'Air Raid' Video

"Air Raid", the new video from North Carolina's HE IS LEGEND, can be seen below. The song is taken from the band's upcoming album, "Few", due on April 28 via Spinefarm Records. HE IS LEGEND frontman Schuylar Croom commented: "We've kept the cathartic experience of a HE IS LEGEND show a strictly personal experience for our fans for some time now. Never have we hit this hard before and we decided it was due time that we showcased our live show through a music video. This video finally captures what we believe to be our best assets, all of the darkness, sexuality and chaos and grooviness of a LEGEND show encompassed amidst the rhythm of the first track our new album called 'Air Raid'. This song really highlights our passion and aggression that peppers the entirety of this new record and we couldn't be more proud. [Director] Justin [Reich] came out to capture this unique experience with us in a way that makes you feel like you're right there in the mix with us. We hope our fans love it and it turns on some new folks. See ya on the dancefloor." HE IS LEGEND's last studio record, "Heavy Fruit", came out in 2014 through Tragic Hero.

As previously reported, rumors have circulated for several months that lead singer and founder Tobias Forge — who performs as Papa Emeritus — fired the entire previous lineup at the end of GHOST's fall 2016 North American tour. Since the musicians wear masks and are only identified as Nameless Ghouls, personnel changes in the group over its eight-year existence have gone unannounced. Earlier this month, however, Swedish guitarist Martin Persner released a video message in which he claimed to have played in GHOST for seven years under the name Omega. He also revealed that he exited the band last July, although he did not disclose the reasons for his departure. Forge writes almost all of the group's music and does most of the act's interviews disguised as a Nameless Ghoul. GHOST will begin recording its fourth full-length album in August, after the band returns home from a North American tour with IRON MAIDEN.

PARADISE LOST Begins Recording New Album

British gothic metal pioneers PARADISE LOST have entered Orgone Studios in Woburn, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom to begin recording their new album for a tentative late 2017 release via Nuclear Blast. The follow-up to 2015's "The Plague Within" is once again being helmed by Jaime Gomez Arellano, who has previously worked with GHOST, CATHEDRAL and TURISAS, among others. Formed in Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1988 and still boasting four of its five original members, the band is widely credited with co-founding the gothic metal genre with its sophomore album, "Gothic" (1991). Through the years, PARADISE LOST has changed its style effectively and reinvented itself again and again. They elbowed their way from their original melodic death metal sound on their debut, "Lost Paradise" (1990) to the classic "Icon" (1993) and more experimental "One Second" (1997). Finally they went back to the roots with their most recent release, "The Plague Within", achieving some of the best reviews of their career. In a 2015 interview with Isolation Grind, Holmes stated about "The Plague Within"'s heavier sound compared to that on some of PARADISE LOST's earlier albums: "We just tried to capture the spirit of the old days without forgetting everything else that has happened over the last 20 years. I don't think the album is back to our roots as such, as we couldn't have written an album like this 25 years ago." Nick also talked about the progression of PARADISE LOST's sound, calling it "just evolution. Certain albums have taken us in significant directions, I guess 'Icon' was probably the first album to do that, and we continued that style until 'One Second'. It's too early to see if ['The Plague Within'] will be a new progression." PARADISE LOST 2017 is: Nick Holmes - Vocals Greg Mackintosh - Lead Guitars Aaron Aedy - Rhythm Guitars Steve Edmondson - Bass Waltteri Väyrynen - Drums

DAVE MUSTAINE: MEGADETH's 'Risk' Should Have Been Released As A Solo Album

Dave Mustaine says that he made a "mistake" releasing "Risk" under the MEGADETH name, explaining that it would have been received far better if it had been made available as his solo album. Issued in 1999, "Risk" received a mixed response from critics and alienated hardcore MEGADETH fans due to its departure from the band's heavy thrash metal roots to a more commercial, pop rock sound. The album debuted at No. 16 on the Billboard chart and was later certified gold for selling half a million copies in the United States. In a recent interview with uDiscover about the birth of thrash metal, Mustaine admitted that MEGADETH had a few directional missteps over the course of its three-decade-plus career and pointed to the mid-to-late 1990s as a particularly turbulent period in the band's history. "We did write some songs with [a] much larger scope in mind, obviously," he said (hear audio below). "I think if you look at the record 'Youthanasia' [1994], for example, there was an accompanying DVD that we put out with that record called 'Evolver', and during 'Evolver', there was a scene in there — if you have seen that, you may recall — [producer] Max Norman is holding a metronome and he's counting out beats per minute." He continued: "This is what happens when you have a production team and somebody has control over the time and different stuff like that that goes along with creating the songs. Because the BPM [beats per minute] for that record… He had said the key to hit songs is everything being in the 120 BPM range. So it wouldn't surprise me if you got a metronome and went and listened to 'Youthanasia' how many songs you would find are in that 120 BPM range. And that's one of the reasons why, when I went back and remixed those and remastered those records, we reset some of those songs back to their original temps, which a lot of them were a little faster. 'Cause the songs felt better, but when you slowed them down, sure, they got a certain heaviness to them, which was awesome, but there was also that speed complex that you have to add into the equation if it's MEGADETH music. Thus the backlash with 'Risk', because people expected that speed and thrashy kind of stuff. If that record would have been called the 'Dave Mustaine Project', people would have loved it. But because it said MEGADETH, they expected MEGADETH. And that was my mistake; I should have called it a solo record. But I had the band guys on there, which would have been totally disrespectful to do that." Mustaine's latest comments echo those he made to Full Metal Jackie last month when he said that writing MEGADETH's latest album, "Dystopia", was "really invigorating" since he didn't "care anymore about trying to write stuff for radio because it just backfires." He added: "Whenever you try and do something for somebody, it usually doesn't work, it ends up being something that's hit-or-miss. At this stage in my life, I don't wanna be taking any chances. I wanna have fun, I wanna write music that I love listening to, and I think that's what we did with 'Dystopia'." MEGADETH will open for German hard rock veterans SCORPIONS on a month-long North American tour this fall. On February 12, MEGADETH was honored with a Grammy in the "Best Metal Performance" category for "Dystopia". MEGADETH recently completed a month-long U.S. tour with AMON AMARTH, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, METAL CHURCH and BUTCHER BABIES.

Video Premiere: Beastwars - 'Some Sell Their Souls'

New Zealand sludge outfit Beastwars wade through thick, heavy riffs in their new music video for “Some Sell Their Souls.”

The band, who released their full-length The Death of All Things in 2016, are shown performing in a lightly crowded room to a barely interested audience.

“The video for ‘Some Sell Their Souls’ was inspired by a set of studio videos we did called The Sundae Sessions, where the audience was sitting around us on chairs,” the band notes. Some of the YouTube comments are hilarious with complaints about how sedate the crowd look, why isn't there a mosh pit etc. With this video we took the audience response to a Beastwars experience to its extreme.”

You can get all three of Beastwars’ albums for “Name Your Price” until April 20.

Talkin 'Bout Flex: Crypt Sermon

1489418927589.jpg

Since Issue #75, Decibel has brought you left-of-center b-sides, rarities, live recordings and new songs from top-tier metal bands via the outstanding Flexi Series.  Want to hear the stories behind these recordings?  Read on.

Everyone 'round these parts gets semenal about Mayhem's seminal debut full-length album.  That's no surprise.  We have also erected arms and other appendages for the muscular, height-scaling doom of Philly upstarts Crypt Sermon.  Their 2015 release Out of the Garden was a highlight of the slow and gritty, and we are happy to support their doomed trip through the closing opus on one of black metal's most essential entries.  Crypt Sermon's contribution to the Decibel Flexi Series was released with the Metal & Beer Fest issue (#151, May 2017), and can be heard below.

We asked guitarist Steve Jansson and drummer Enrique Sagarnaga about their intriguing choice, so while you bang out most unrighteously, be sure to glance at the screen a few times to read their thoughts on "De Mysteriis Doom Sathanas."

When were you approached to contribute to the Flexi Series?

Steve Jansson: Albert has always been very supportive of us and approached us about the idea doing a flexi about a year ago. It was a busy year for all of us, so it took us a while to finally commit and lock down a recording date. We eventually pulled ourselves together and made it happen. We're incredibly grateful for the opportunity!

How did you choose "De Mysteriis"?

Jansson: This completely ridiculous idea (a doomed out interpretation of Mayhem's "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas", which will be appropriately re-named "De Mysteriis Doom Sathanas") came about when Enrique was talking with Thomas Tannenberger (of Abigor fame) and mentioned that we were debating on recording a cover track. Thomas made the suggestion try this out. Initially I wasn't certain how serious he actually was about it; I sort of laughed it off at first, but then got to thinking about it and sort of took it as a challenge. Everyone else seemed keen on the idea. We all agreed that if it completely sucked (which it had so much potential to do just that) we would back out and do something else, but we gave it a shot and are extremely proud of the end result.

Enrique Sagarnaga: With just a few exceptions in mind, I've always thought straightforward cover songs fall pale in comparison to the source material. With that in mind, I  will say that I have always wanted to take a recording from an album that is near and dear to me, and re-work it as something new with its own identity. Covering this Mayhem classic presented a unique opportunity to experiment with this idea.

When and where did you record the song?  How much time and work did it take?

Jansson: We recorded everything in early October and used various locations in Philadelphia. We worked with Arthur Rizk again, who recorded and mixed our full-length. Thomas jumped on board to master the track, as well as contribute some vocals/vocal arranging. It was a pretty incredible experience working with him and I think he really pushed us all to the next level, especially Brooks. Those two make a killer team. We look forward to work with him again in the future.

Sagarnaga: Arthur has been incredibly supportive of the band since we first worked with him, so having him return to the fold was and no-brainer. Having Thomas contribute vocals exceeded all expectations and really set the bar for what's to come with our next album. This recording also sees our vocalist Brooks experimenting with synths here and there, and proved to be a much-needed element for this recording.

Do you know yet what color your flexi is?  Any thoughts about what the color choice is or should be? (This question was asked well before the flexi disc was available.)

Jansson: I'm not sure what color it will be but if we have any say in this it should be purple and black. I think the reasons are pretty obvious.

Have you listened to other songs in the Flexi Series?  What is your favorite Flexi so far?

Jansson: I have, but can't think of a favorite off of the top of my head.

Sagarnaga: In Solitude covering Samhain's "Mother of Mercy".

DARKEST HOUR To Release Cover Of JUDAS PRIEST's 'Painkiller' For 'Record Store Day'

Washington, D.C. metallers DARKEST HOUR, who released their ninth album, "Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora", earlier this month, have announced a limited-edition seven-inch singer, "Painkiller/I Don't Want to Hear It" (via Southern Lord Recordings) for Record Store Day (April 22). The release, which is limited to 1000 copies, features new song "Enter Oblivion" from "Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora", as well as covers of MINOR THREAT's "I Don't Want To Hear It" and JUDAS PRIEST's "Painkiller". All proceeds from the seven-inch will be donated to the National Immigration Law Center. DARKEST HOUR founder and guitar player Mike Schleibaum had this to say about the release: "It is with great pride we present to you our first Record Store Day release, which also happens to be our first seven-inch record in almost two decades! This seven-inch features two covers that we recorded before the launch of our Indiegogo campaign last year. Although the songs were released for free as part of a thank you to our loyal fans, we felt they wouldn't get their justice served without some sort of physical release. In addition to the covers, this seven-inch also includes the song 'Enter Oblivion' from our new album, 'Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora'. This song and seven-inch have a very special meaning for us. "Having toured the world countless times at this point, we have seen the destructiveness and divisiveness that arises from nation states, borders, and immigration policies. These invisible, arbitrary lines that divide families, cultures, and humanity are archaic and obsolete. We believe that no human being is ever illegal just for existing. We believe that everyone regardless of race, religion, age, ethic heritage, sexual identification and sexual orientation should be treated with the respect and dignity that everyone deserves. A DARKEST HOUR show is a place where everyone is welcome, where individual thought is celebrated. We do not want a hive mind of loyal followers; we want a community of free-thinking individuals. It is in this spirit that we, in conjunction with Southern Lord Recordings, will donate all proceeds from this seven-inch record to the National Immigration Law Center. They are a non-profit who have been on the forefront of the fight to deliver services to those who find themselves caught in the middle of this outdated, feverishly demonic system. "The song 'Enter Oblivion' centers on a traveler with no home and is, therefore the perfect choice for this seven-inch. Vinyl is our preferred way of enjoying music and the depth of these songs on wax is unparalleled in any other medium. If you can find this seven-inch before it sells out, get it! It will never be repressed and will always be a special part of our history. Cheers to Southern Lord Recordings for helping us make this unique record and also for echoing our thoughts. It is only together that we can turn the present tide of humanity towards the idea that we all share one world, together." darkesthourrecordstoreday2017

TANKARD: 'One Foot In The Grave' Cover Artwork Unveiled

German alcohol-soaked thrash metal act TANKARD will release its seventeenth studio album, "One Foot In The Grave", on June 2 via Nuclear Blast. The follow-up to 2014's "R.I.B. (Rest In Beer)" was recorded at Gernhart Studios in Troisdorf with producer Martin Buchwalter (DESTRUCTION, ACCUSER, PERZONAL WAR, SUIDAKRA). The cover artwork for "One Foot In The Grave" was created by Patrick Strogulski, who is a student of Sebastian Krüger, the recent artwork designer of TANKARD. He also created the cover artwork for the "A Girl Called Cerveza" and "R.I.B." albums. With this, the iconic band mascot, the TANKARD Alien, celebrates his return after about 13 years of absence. The alien was born in 1989 with the "Alien" EP and has already graced five album covers. The TANKARD fan club "Maniac Aliens" is also named after it. States TANKARD vocalist Andreas "Gerre" Geremia: "Mister Strogulski has once again created a real masterpiece and surpassed himself. Our first plan was that I would be on the cover instead of the alien... but, lucky me, it ended up being the alien..." The clip below offers a look behind the scenes of the "One Foot In The Grave" album production, as well the very first song snippets. tankardonefootcd

BLACK STONE CHERRY: 'Cheaper To Drink Alone' Video Released

"Cheaper To Drink Alone", the new Blake Judd-directed video from Kentucky rockers BLACK STONE CHERRY, can be seen below. The clip was filmed on February 21 at Spillway Bar And Grill in Bowling Green, Kentucky. "This video is the first time we have stepped outside of our comfort zone, only to end up further into our comfort zone," commented BLACK STONE CHERRY. "It's funny, it's light hearted, it's rock 'n' roll. It shows a side of the band that exists on a daily basis, and that is our love for ridiculous humor and not taking ourselves too seriously. We hope y'all enjoy it as much as we did creating it! We are also honored to have appearances of our friends from Number JUAN Tequila, Against The Grain Brewery, and Lzzy and Joe from our longtime buddies HALESTORM." "Cheaper To Drink Alone" is taken from BLACK STONE CHERRY's fifth studio album, "Kentucky", which was released in April 2016 via Mascot Label Group. The CD was recorded at Barrick Recording in Glasgow, Kentucky. Taking a "back-to-the-roots" approach, the effort was produced in the same way and same place as BLACK STONE CHERRY's eponymous debut album, which broke the band out of the small southern backwater and onto the world stage. BLACK STONE CHERRY guitarist Ben Wells told Metal Hammer magazine about "Kentucky": "This is the first time we [got] to self-produce. And most of the songs, with the exception of maybe two or three out of fifteen, are all written by us, the four of us. Which all of our songs always are — we might co-write with somebody — but this time, the majority of the songs are all written by us. So it feels really good to kind of have that creative freedom. It's raw, it's heavy. [We went] back to our hometown to record it, where we did our debut album. So we're kind of revisiting some of that old mojo that we had, and I think our fans have been wanting that from us for a long time now. These are probably some of the coolest songs we've written as far as the music and the melodies."

Video: New GHOST Lineup Performs In London

Fan-filmed video footage of GHOST's March 26 performance at O2 Forum Kentish Town in London, England can be seen below. The new lineup of GHOST gave its first live performance on Friday night (March 24) as the Swedish-based band kicked off its 2017 "Popestar" European tour in Norwich, England. As previously reported, rumors have circulated for several months that lead singer and founder Tobias Forge — who performs as Papa Emeritus — fired the entire previous lineup at the end of GHOST's fall 2016 North American tour. Meanwhile, the identity of one of the band's new members — who wear masks and are only known as Nameless Ghouls — may have already been revealed. Former KORN touring keyboardist Zac Baird hinted in a series of tweets that he was in England for his first show with an unnamed act, adding, "I've spent 90% of my life in costume." Since the musicians wear masks and are only identified as Nameless Ghouls, personnel changes in the group over its eight-year existence have gone unannounced.

Video: BATTLE BEAST Performs In Paris

Fan-filmed video footage of BATTLE BEAST's March 25 performance at Petit Bain in Paris, France can be seen below. BATTLE BEAST's fourth album, "Bringer Of Pain", was released on February 17 via Nuclear Blast Records. The ten-track disc was recorded and produced at JKB Studios by keyboardist Janne Björkroth, was mixed by Björkroth alongside Viktor Gullichsen and Mikko Karmila, and was mastered by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios. The cover artwork was crafted by Jan Yrlund. "Bringer Of Pain" is BATTLE BEAST's first album to feature guitarist Joona Björkroth, who joined the band in 2015. BATTLE BEAST in February 2015 parted ways with lead guitarist and main songwriter Anton Kabanen due to "insurmountable disagreements" with the other members of the band. Speaking to Metalholic, BATTLE BEAST vocalist Noora Louhimo stated about the writing process for "Bringer Of Pain": "You always have the pressure on to write good music and do a good album, but now we had extra pressure because people had their suspicions. People were already judging us that, 'They're not going to make it. They're not going to make as good music.' But as you can hear, yes we can! [Laughs] So, yes, it was a nerve-breaking, but still a very rewarding process to do this new album. For me personally, this was such a great experience. I learned so much about the other guys; the other band members. We got Joona to be part of this BATTLE BEAST family and now I'm just full of excitement. I can't wait to get on the road and bring the pain!" Asked how she thinks having six songwriters instead of one impacts the sound and dynamic of the band, Noora said: "We all learned a lot from each other, how we want to work together. There are so many different ways to write songs. For example, Janne likes to write songs by himself and bring them to the table when they are almost final. I like to do solo also, but I like co-writing also. With Joona, we have a similar wave we are on, and we have a really good work ethic, and a good friendship also. So it's very easy to work with him. I did write some demos with Eero, our bass player, and our other guitar player Jusso, and it was fun also. I think through these next years, we are going to find new ways, and the best ways, for BATTLE BEAST to produce music."

SNAKECHARMER: 'Second Skin' EPK Available

Frontiers Music Srl will release SNAKECHARMER's sophomore album, "Second Skin", on May 12. The official EPK (Electronic Press Kit) for the disc is available below. The British hard rock supergroup SNAKECHARMER was originally founded in 2011 by former WHITESNAKE members Micky Moody and Neil Murray along with the perfect mix of high-caliber musicians, including Laurie Wisefield (WISHBONE ASH), Harry James (THUNDER, MAGNUM), Adam Wakeman (OZZY OSBOURNE), and Chris Ousey (HEARTLAND). The band's debut self-titled album was released in 2013 and musically the record showed a finely crafted hard rock style mixed with blues and melodic overtones, akin to Micky and Neil's former band and BAD COMPANY, with hints of early FOREIGNER as well. SNAKECHARMER played live shows regularly in support of the album's release and built a solid fanbase in Europe. In 2016, Moody left the band and was replaced by the Irish-born Simon McBride on lead guitar. Simon was hailed "among the best blues-rock players anywhere in the world" by Guitarist magazine and has built up an impressive resume playing with outstanding rock, soul, and blues artists. "Second Skin" is the hotly anticipated second effort from SNAKECHARMER and brings the listener straight back to the good old days of real rock n' roll played with heart and soul. Slightly harder edged compared to the debut, but with roots still firmly planted in the classic hard rock vibe with a hint of late '70s AOR, this new record sounds fresh and crisp. Murray says: "It's been a rather long journey, but finally I'm very pleased to announce that SNAKECHARMER are soon to release our new album, 'Second Skin'. "The band has now found its own unique musical identity and in particular Laurie Wisefield and Chris Ousey have contributed some very powerful and melodic songs, which still have the SNAKECHARMER blues-rock distinctive trademarks. "The band works in a very democratic and collaborative way, which means that sometimes there is a lot of discussion before decisions are finally made, and it was great to have a more objective viewpoint from producer Gary Stevenson, who also fired the band up with his ideas, enthusiasm and sonic skills. "We can't wait to get out on tour and play some of the new songs, together with the best of our established classics, both SNAKECHARMER and WHITESNAKE, and showcase our new virtuoso guitarist, the brilliant Simon McBride." Track listing: 01. Sounds Like A Plan 02. That Kind Of Love 03. Are You Ready To Fly 04. Follow Me Under 05. I'll Take You As You Are 06. Hell Of A Way To Live 07. Fade Away 08. Dress It Up 09. Punching Above My Weight 10. Forgive & Forget 11. Where Do We Go From Here SNAKECHARMER is: Chris Ousey - vocals Laurie Wisefield - guitar Simon McBride - guitar Adam Wakeman - keyboards Neil Murray - bass Harry James - drums

METALLICA: Official Footage Of 'Halo On Fire' Performance From LOLLAPALOOZA BRASIL

Official Metallica TV professionally flmed video footage of METALLICA performing the song "Halo On Fire" on March 25 at Lollapalooza Brasil at Autódromo de Interlagos in São Paulo, Brazil can be seen below. METALLICA will next play South America's Lollapalooza events in Argentina and Chile on March 31 and April 1, respectively. The North American leg of METALLICA's "WorldWired" 2017 tour kicks off in Baltimore and will hit stadiums in 25 cities before winding down in mid-August. Support on the quartet's first North American trek since 2009 will come mainly from AVENGED SEVENFOLD and VOLBEAT, with GOJIRA taking over for the latter group for the last six shows. The first European leg of "WorldWired" kicks off on September 4 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and stretches through November. After a break, the trek will pick up again on February 10, 2018 in Bologna, Italy, and continue through May, finishing up in Helsinki, Finland. Speaking about what fans can expect from the stage show on the "WorldWired" tour, bassist Robert Trujillo told Italy's Virgin Radio: "Yeah, I think what's exciting about what's happening right now is it's all still very fresh, and we're figuring out, visually, where production's going, we're getting to know the stage a little more. We're playing in the round, and it's been a while, so what happens is there's a different sort of approach to where you're supposed to be or what's comfortable or where you need to be. We're still working through the visuals you may see on the stage, 'cause the stage itself is also a screen, really. So there's a lot of things going on, and it takes a little bit of time to navigate… what I say, 'navigate the terrain.' So we're still trying to figure it out." Regarding how METALLICA goes about choosing the setlist for its live performances, Trujillo said: "Well, that's a challenge too, because you have the back catalog, which is pretty strong. A lot of the hardcore fans wanna hear the deep cuts — songs like 'Orion' or maybe like a 'Disposable Heroes'; you know, songs that we don't play all the time — and then, of course, they wana hear 'Sandman' and 'Nothing Else Matters' and some of the hits. So Lars's [Ulrich, drums] job is to balance that out as best as he can, and then we sort of go over it and see if that works. But we do try to change the set every night; it's never gonna be exactly the same, which keeps things fun and interesting." He continued: "One of the things that I think is important, and I think there's some pride in this, is that over the last few years, we've actually played obscure songs, like 'Frayed Ends Of Sanity', off the 'Justice' album, which hadn't been played ever with METALLICA live. So we did that a couple of years ago. So the fact that we're still doing that, I think, helps us become, actually, a better band; we grow from those experiences. And I believe those are the experiences that have helped 'Hardwired' become that much better of an album."

Former THE HAUNTED Frontman PETER DOLVING Exits DRESS THE DEAD

DRESS THE DEAD, the new band featuring ex-FORBIDDEN guitarist Craig Locicero, has parted ways with former THE HAUNTED frontman Peter Dolving. The split happened only three months after DRESS THE DEAD — whose lineup also includes Mark Hernandez on drums, James Walker on bass and Dan Delay on guitar — played its first two shows at Slim's in San Francisco, California as the support act for DEATH ANGEL. Locicero commented on Dolving's exit in a lengthy Facebook post, writing: "After the last few weeks of change and the shock that followed, it was best to regain our bearings before saying too much. "Let's recap. Peter announced to Facebook that he almost took his own life, has occupational burnout and he's retiring from being a professional musician. Just the day before, we were having conversations about him moving to the Bay Area and setting up a string of local shows to sharpen our claws as well as our future dealings with a certain kick-ass record label. He hit us without warning and left us standing at the altar. "Of course, we went through the natural cycle of emotions when you hear these things. Shock, worry, sorrow, anger, questions, numb, frustration, repeat and then finally some more clarity. "We understood how this makes anyone who was getting into DRESS THE DEAD feel. I mean, we just got started, played two kick-ass sold-out shows with DEATH ANGEL (thanks, boys!) and released '1969' to a fantastic response. It was brutal to be thrown into chaos and we deservedly needed to reevaluate ourselves and the band. "What in the fuck does anyone say to such a dark statement and change? We love the hell out of Peter, but finding this out on Facebook was completely unacceptable and it made for an uncomfortable situation much worse by the way everyone was alerted. No way around it. He owed us at least a private conversation. Maybe a warning shot? At least he's alive and that's what matters on that level. But there's the others in the band that are continuing to think about. Our careers and families. We matter as well. What's done is done and we're are moving on... "This band started with my vision and that vision will continue. I wanted to create something heavy, beautiful, thrashy, melodic and rocking with dynamic musicians. I found the right brothers and we've done that. Our template has been set and we will continue doing so with another singer. So far we've had some inquiries and conversations. Haven't brought anyone into the room as of yet. "We feel as if we need to cast a larger net for submissions because the right person may or may not be located in the Bay Area. They would be preferably the U.S. and willing to relocate, if need be. That would be ideal, but this is the modern era so nothing is off the table. "We have the example of '1969' already out there, but there's so much more music to be worked on. "This is how we'll do it... "For now submit your audio or video clips via PM our DRESS THE DEAD page on Facebook. It can be your own material, live or in the studio. Doesn't matter, just make it your best example. "In the meantime we will be setting up a way for those who make the cut to get a couple of tracks with no vocals on them that the public hasn't heard to work with. This will be ideal for anyone serious about inquiring. "There will be a clean slate going forward. What was in the past is now far behind us. That being said, there are a few requirements. Have your shit together. Be able to sing and scream with range when needed. Be brave enough to stay the fuck out of the box. Be a great live performer with stage presence. Don't take yourself too seriously and have a sense of humor. No hard drugs or alcoholics. Simple stuff, really. "It's okay to start feeling better about DRESS THE DEAD again. Spring has sprung and we're moving on. "While we've been knocked down for a minute, we're getting right the fuck back up!" DRESS THE DEAD's song "1969" can be streamed below. The track was recorded at Sharkbite Studios in Oakland, California and was produced by MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn. It was engineered by Zack Ohren and mixed by Joel Wanasek.

How KORN Created A New Subgenre In Heavy Music

Andrea Rock of Warner Music Italy recently conducted an interview with KORN singer Jonathan Davis. You can now watch the chat below. A couple of excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET). On KORN pioneering a new sound with its self-titled 1994 album: Davis: "It's just what we did. We really didn't think about it — honestly. It was just how we played. The slower, downtuned — 'cause we were playing seven strings at that time — just that vibe of what we did was really heavy and that's just how it ended up. We didn't really think about it, honestly. It's just how we played. The first album came out and it just shocked a lot of people; they didn't know what to think of us, they didn't know what to do with us. And over the years, it's just evolved into changing and making a new genre in heavy music." On whether he thinks it's possible that a new band can come along today and have the same kind of impact that KORN did more than two decades ago: Davis: "It's always possible, bro. But it's hard. I think it's a different time now. I think there's a lot of music that's just saturated the whole music universe. So it's gonna take someone to do something really out there and something different for something like that to catch on, because back in the day, when you got signed with a record label, a big record label, it was a whole different way back then. Now I'm praying for something new to come out. 'Cause I'm always loving that and I've always… I'm trying to do different things, and that's what really makes me love music — finding different kind of stuff like that." KORN and STONE SOUR will join forces for a summer tour, set to get underway June 16 at the USANA Amphitheatre in Salt Lake City, Utah and then continue through early August. Presented by Live Nation, "The Serenity Of Summer" tour will be rounded out by support from Japan's female-fronted BABYMETAL, southern rapper YELAWOLF and ISLANDER (June 16-25), followed by a second leg (July 19 - August 2) which will see KORN joined by SKILLET, YELAWOLF and DED, creating a versatile bill reminiscent of KORN's famed "Family Values" tours in the past.

Happy 10th anniversary to Machine Head’s ‘The Blackening’

It wasn’t like Machine Head was in a bad place in 2007, it’s just that they’d lost some momentum some 13 years into their career. Their third album, 1999’s The Burning Red, found the band flirting with rap-metal and lost them some audience, kind of similar to what happened with Suicide Silence earlier this year (come to […]

Label Report: Witches Brew

Label Report is a new weekly column shedding light on underground labels releasing extreme metal, whether it's death, black, thrash, heavy, speed, doom or something else! This week is Witches Brew.

Hailing from Germany, Witches Brew have spent the last fifteen years releasing a multitude of thrash, death and heavy metal albums, EPs and splits. While they’ve released albums from heavyweights like Toxic Holocaust in the past, Witches Brew haven’t slacked off in recent years.

Bands from around the globe call Witches Brew home, releasing new recordings as well as reissuing rare or out-of-print gems. For the first edition of The Label Report, sink your teeth into a few of the label’s recent choice cuts.

Fyrecross - Burn Them to the Ground
Technically a CD reissue of the Greek heavy/speed metal crew’s debut EP, Burn Them to the Ground is heavy on shredding, galloping riffs and soaring vocals. Album opener “Fyrecross” begins with a guitar solo. Elsewhere, technical leads intertwine with the songs’ driving riffs to attack from both sides.

Hellfire - Goat Revenge
The goat’s revenge is evil, whatever it is. Hellfire deliver an incinerating death/black metal fusion, combining meaty death metal riffs with tremolo picking and blast beats. Guitarist/vocalist Karargh howls like a man possessed, blending throat-shredding black metal shrieks and death metal growls.

Calamity - Imminent Disaster
Calamity play technical thrash that strikes with an unusual amount of aggression. Furious guitar playing and energetic vocals take the lead on Imminent Disaster, seamless transitioning from furious six string assaults to air guitar-worthy solos and back. Another reissue, Calamity have included a bonus track on this version of their album.

You can find Witches Brew on their website, on Facebook and on Bandcamp

DREAM THEATER To Bring 'Images, Words & Beyond' Tour To North America In The Fall

Dream Theater World conducted an interview with DREAM THEATER guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung when the band performed in Trondheim, Norway on February 20. You can now watch the chat below. Asked about DREAM THEATER's plans for the rest of 2017, Petrucci said: "We have the second European leg [of the tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of the 'Images And Words' album] in April and May. We're gonna take the summer off, and I have my camp in August. We'll reconvene in September and we're gonna be playing in Asia. And we're gonna bring the same ['Images And Words' 25th-anniversary] tour to North America, where, as soon as we announced [the European leg], al our U.S. fans were, like, 'You've gotta come here.' So we will do that. And that'll bring us to just before the holidays. And the following year we'll get in and start working on a new album, but not before that." DREAM THEATER's European tour in celebration of "Images And Words"' twenty-fifth anniversary kicked off on January 30 in Rome, Italy. Each performance sees the iconic progressive rock band delivering an unparalleled live set of "Images And Words" in its entirety along with fan favorites from their renowned catalogue. DREAM THEATER last fall completed the second leg of its extensive North American headline tour which found the group performing its widely acclaimed double concept album, "The Astonishing", in immersive and interactive settings for a unique and unmatched live experience.

Here’s a metal bagpipe version of the Power Rangers theme song

You might remember Archy Jay,  aka The Snake Charmer, from her metal bagpipe metal medley of Lamb of God tunes we wrote about last year. The medley, done with guitarist/producer Daran Katiyar, was extremely well-done, and the fact that a woman was playing bagpipes didn’t make it any less metal. Yesterday, The Snake Charmer returned, this […]

HELLYEAH Frontman: 'Building A Relationship Starts With Vulnerability'

Metal-Heads.de conducted an interview with HELLYEAH singer Chad Gray before the band's March 25 concert in Düsseldorf, Germany as the support act for KORN. You can now watch the chat below. Speaking about the lyrical message behind HELLYEAH's latest single, "Love Falls", Gray said: "It's really important to me to write kind of vague and ambigious, so people can make it… 'Cause maybe it is about a relationship or whatever, and that's how somebody makes that connection to the song. Or maybe it is about a different type of love that you've lost or whatever. But I think that everybody in this world that has any kind of human emotion or feeling has had an experience with lost love, whether it's a breakup or whether it's... I mean, think about death. You know what I mean? My God! And just the idea that… It's kind of my fucked up way in my head that good things go away. I mean, we're all products of our past [and that's what] made me who I am." He continued: "I've lost love and I have experienced death and the loss of people that I love on pretty much every level, and it really does suck. So it's not like I'm writing something that I don't know anything about. But I wanna make it… If I write it from my heart and I write it vague enough, people can make it part of their life." Gray added: "Building a relationship, I think it starts with vulnerability — to build a strong relationship. And that's how really strong, solid relationships grow — by people giving in and trusting and being vulnerable to another. And writing songs is very much doing that, 'cause it's something that I have experience with. I put it out there. Like the line in [the song] 'X': 'Bear my soul.' It's wide open. Are you gonna embrace it? Or are you gonna fucking stab it? And trust me, both happens. I mean, my God, that's the world now — to be negative and to rip shit apart. It's terrible." "Love Falls" is featured on HELLYEAH's fifth album, "Unden!able", which was released on June 3, 2016 via Eleven Seven Music. The effort marks the first time HELLYEAH's current lineup — Gray, guitarists Tom Maxwell and Christian Brady, drummer Vinnie Paul and bassist Kyle Sanders — has recorded together as a unit.

JOEY BELLADONNA Explains ANTHRAX's Enduring Popularity

"Will And Tom" conducted an interview with ANTHRAX singer Joey Belladonna on February 13 at Rock City in Nottingham, United Kingdom. You can now watch the chat below. Comparing studio work to performing live, Joey said: "I love both. Obviously in the studio, you're creating something from the start. You can rearrange it, you can change it, you can keep it, you can do all these kind of things, you can layer it, you can do all kinds of cool stuff and make something come to life. Then you get to try it live and then you can really master it in a live situation. So they both go hand in hand for me. I love the studio, 'cause, I mean, you just walk away. Even during the day, I'll come up with something that we've been working on and I'll go, 'Wow! That sounds cool. Let's keep it.' And it's that fast sometimes. Most every day, I do one song a day. And we just MP3 it now and it's great. But I do like 'em both. Live, it's obviously a lot more challenging in a different way, 'cause you get one shot, and you've gotta try to do whatever you can to be in key and stay in time and all that good stuff and make it sound really cool. But I just love it, 'cause you can kind of branch away from the tune. I kind of keep it the same, but I also kind of play around. I kind of reach for a few things to maybe give it a little extra this or that." Belladonna also talked about the reasons for ANTHRAX's longevity and enduring popularity. He said: "I just think we stay on course of what we're supposed to do and we do it with the best intentions. And we're always striving, and we have a lot of ideas and there's many, many things that we can do as a band, 'cause we have a lot of different influences and stuff. So we're versatile in our own way, but yet we're playing better… Everything, I think, is better, and I think we're just that much interested in doing it well. And it's great. You know how a lot of people just kind of can be indecisive or are not wanting to do it or are feeling bored or not influenced anymore or encouraged to do it. There's none of that [with us]. So I think the strive is there, and we're just capable of doing something really good, and I think people are feeling it and seeing it. It's all I can think of. Other than that, we're just being ourselves. It just gets better, I think. And it feels good to be doing it well. I can't think of any other secret. There's none to speak of — for me anyhow." ANTHRAX kicks off "Killthrax", the band's co-headline tour with KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, on Wednesday, March 29 at the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, New Jersey.

Black Dahlia Murder’s Trevor Strnad said he’d expect Suicide Silence backlash

With Suicide Silence’s self-titled album getting trashed as much as the band’s instruments have lately, everyone’s got an opinion on their transition from deathcore to nu-metal, and many of them aren’t good ones. However, given that the band made the album they wanted to make and have no apologies for it, when their friends and […]
